In this series the reader is introduced to a variety of characters. First, we are introduced to the sorcerer Hoyt MacCionaoith as he battles it out with Lilith (Queen of all vampires) and his own brother who has just been newly turned. It is shortly after this that the goddess Morrigan appears to Hoyt and tells him he is about to take on the entire vampire army. This he is intended to do with the help of a witch, a warrior, a scholar, a shape-shifter and one who is lost.
This story does become a little too far-reaching in places. Just because you are writing about fantasy creatures in a fantasy world doesn't mean all rules are out the window. I understand that the characters had to be incredible beings in order to take on a massive army and a 2,000 year old vampire but the story looses some integrity that way.
That being said, Nora Roberts will captivate you. If she doesn't do it in the first book, keep reading. The stories get progressively better and the characters grow throughout the course of the novels. This series my contain one of my favorite characters of all time. Her name is Blair and unfortunately you won't meet her until the end of book one.
I would give the first book in these a 3.5, the second a 4, and the third a 4.5 out of 5 stars. I would recommend these to the reader who wants to venture into the world of vampires and out of the world of romance but I would not recommend it to anyone who was looking for a horror novel. If you are looking for a horror novel you will be sorely disappointed.
